The best (easy) climbing plants for indoor gardening
Share
Fancy a plant that will create a bit of drama in your life without the plant parenting drama?
Indoor climbing plants are a great way to add greenery and interest to your home while taking advantage of vertical space. Compact yet impressive, these plants are all quite inexpensive and hardy, suitable for different spaces and light conditions.
We have listed some of the more popular and well-suited climbing plants for indoor gardening that can be put on moss poles (some work better than others), added to trellises, potted up in a Koto, or then flipped around, these plants can also vine and hang down over shelves etc.
Let's get into it.
Easy & beginner climbing & vining: Pothos/ Devil's Ivy (Epipremnum aureum)
Pothos is a hardy and low-maintenance climbing plant that can thrive in various light conditions. It has attractive heart-shaped leaves and comes in some cool neon variegations. Inexpensive and hardy, it is a great indoor plant for those first plant purchases!
Tip: Pothos can do well in humid rooms such as the bathroom and is just as happy climbing and growing down in long, lush leaf curtains.
Crowd-pleasers that look impressive: Philodendrons
Several varieties of Philodendron make excellent indoor climbers, including the Heartleaf Philodendron (Philodendron hederaceum), Micans, and Melanochrysum (pictured below).
Our Melanochrysum is one of our top moss pole plants that has given us a lot of mileage as a moss pole plant, with gorgeous and glossy leaves.
Other Philo winners pictured below: Micans on a trellis and Rojo Congo on a Turra. These plants give beautiful results for not LOADS of effort, though they do need plenty of watering!
Hardy Hoyas (Hoya carnosa)
Commonly known as the Wax Plant, Hoya is an attractive vining plant with thick, waxy leaves. It's a plant that is maybe not really a moss pole plant, but it is still an attractive plant that can climb and vine and grow in cool shapes. Hoyas are sturdy and durable and are often great beginner plants.
Versatile Syngoniums/Nephthytis (Syngonium podophyllum)
Also known as the Arrowhead Plant, Syngonium is a versatile climber with arrow-shaped leaves. It comes in various colors and is suitable for indoor spaces. We love syngoniums for all the great variegations and colours they come in.
We especially love the Syngonium Mojito!
Moss pole Monsteras: Monstera Adansonii & Monstera Dubia
Often referred to as the Swiss Cheese plant, Monsteras have unique fenestrated leaves and are some of the most popular indoor plants.
Indoors as in nature, it's definitely an eye-catching climber! The two Monstera types that we have had some great climbing and moss pole results with: Monstera Adansonii (Monkey Mask) and Monstera Dubia.
The Monkey Mask (Adansonii) above really takes well to being grown in moss.
Our Monstera Dubia loves climbing and giving us bigger and bigger leaves, see below for a comparison on how small the leaves started off as.
When growing climbing plants indoors, consider the lighting conditions of your space and provide appropriate support structures such as trellises or moss poles. You should "listen" to your plant and adjust based on feedback! Keep your climbing plants hydrated to help them put out new roots and growth.
Have fun with these easy climbers!
