Choosing the right moss pole for Monstera Deliciosa (& its variants)
Share
Monstera Deliciosa, and its lovely variants like the Albo and Thai Constellation, are natural climbers. Giving them the right support early on makes a huge difference in their long-term health, stability, and overall look. If you’re deciding on a moss pole setup, here’s how to choose the best option and set your plant up for success.

Bigger moss poles for a bigger plant
For Monstera Deliciosa, we recommend our largest and sturdiest options: the XXL Line moss poles or the D-Pole line. These provide the greatest volume for moss and aerial roots, which is essential as Monsteras mature and start producing thick, complex aerial root systems.

How many plants? Change your moss pole set-up accordingly
If you’re keeping multiple plants in the same pot, consider using more than one pole. Position each plant so the back of the stem faces the pole: this encourages aerial roots to grow directly into the pole’s substrate rather than out into the air.
You may also choose to separate the plants during a repot. This isn’t essential, but keep in mind that multiple Monsteras sharing a pot will compete for nutrients, light, and space as they grow.
Choosing the right substrate
Monsteras thrive with a full wet/dry cycle, especially their large aerial roots. For stuffing your moss pole, a mix of sphagnum moss with bark or coco chips works beautifully. This balances moisture retention while still allowing airflow and drying between waterings.

Repotting vs adding to an existing plant pot
Are you repotting, or adding a pole to an already-established plant?
- Screw-stake or Stake base: Ideal for adding a pole to an existing pot without disturbing the roots too much.
- Anchor base: Designed to be buried under the substrate, relying on the weight of the plant and soil for stability—great when repotting.

XXL vs. D-Pole: which one do I choose?
For Deliciosa variants like Thai Constellation, we recommend one of our two largest options:
- D-Pole Modular Moss Pole

Here’s how they differ:
D-Pole:

-
- Single open face encourages the plant to grow in a single, forward facing direction.
- Clear plastic back seals in moisture, meaning less frequent watering.
- Enclosed back also keeps aerial roots inside the pole, which can look cleaner.
- Requires some assembly, and is less rigid unsupported than the XXL.
XXL Pole:

-
- Cylinder shape allows the plant to vine freely.
- Can support more than one stem wrapped around the pole
- Ideal for full, more natural growth patterns.
- Sturdy and rigid, easy to assemble
Both options offer the strength and moss volume needed to support those impressively large aerial roots.
Don't forget stability as they grow
Monsteras get big and heavy. As your plant climbs and the pole fills out, it’s important to secure it properly. Wall brackets are a simple way to prevent tipping and protect both your plant and your space.
